The public health programs offered in the Greater Quebec City region meet many of the English-speaking population’s disease prevention and health promotion needs. Jeffery Hale Community Services offers an extensive lineup of community health programs in English.

In addition, Jeffery Hale Community Services collaborates with the Direction régionale de santé publique on various campaigns (flu vaccinations, breast cancer screenings, etc.) and helps keep the English-speaking community informed.

8-1-1 Info-Santé and Info Social

8-1-1 is a valuable source of information about health and social services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For example, if you are wondering if you should go to an emergency room or a medical clinic, you can talk to an Info-Santé nurse who will help you decide.

Info-Santé and Info-Social 811 provide a free and confidential telephone consultation service.

Dialing 811 allows you to quickly reach a nurse or a social worker in case of need.

An Info-Santé nurse can give advice and answer questions about health. They can also tell you where to get the care or services you need.

An Info-Social social worker can help you when you are going through a difficult situation. They can support you, intervene in the event of a crisis or direct you to the right service.

9-1-1 emergency services

9-1-1 is the best way to get help quickly in an emergency (medical emergency, fire, police). However, not all 9-1-1 operators in the Greater Québec City region speak English.

9-1-1 services are provided by a private, non-profit organization (not a government agency) and therefore they are not part of the health and social services Access Program for English speakers. That said, we are not aware of any situation in the Greater Québec City region where English speakers have had difficulty obtaining 911 services in English.

Poison Control Centre (CAPQ)

1-800-463-5060 is the number to call to reach the Québec Poison Control Centre. This service is available free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in the event of acute poisoning.

You can obtain information in English or French about poisons and available antidotes. Poisonings can occur when certain medications, plants, or cleaning products are swallowed or come in contact with eyes or skin.

The Poison Control Centre assesses your situation, advises you on how to get to the nearest hospital, and even calls the hospital to tell them you’re on your way.
